how
to apply
All UCSC graduate program applications are done online
through Princeton Review system. You can access the instructions and links to apply on the UCSC Graduate Division's website at http://graddiv.ucsc.edu/admissions/. The application
window for the 2008-09 academic year is now closed; we will begin to accept applications for 2009-10 on October 1, 2008. Our deadline for preferred fellowship consideration is February 1, 2009; the final application deadline is April 1, 2009. Applications and letters of recommendation are accepted only through the online system.
Be sure to read the current application instructions thoroughly. Also, you may want to read the FAQ section to find answers to some of your questions.
Note: While working on your application in the online system, remember to save often. Also, please
send an email to let us know that you will be submitting an application (optional)
or if you
have any questions: scicom (at) ucsc.edu. Program director Robert Irion is available for phone conversations with serious applicants.
The science writing program requires
GRE Test scores. All applicants must submit General Test
scores. Those applicants who do not have a Ph.D. must also
submit
the Subject Test scores in one of the following fields: biochemistry, cell & molecular biology, biology, chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics, or physics. Use the UC Santa Cruz code
4860 for GRE test scores there
are no department codes. See the Educational Testing Services (ETS) website for test details. The program will accept old scores, but only if you have an original statement. Contact the program office for information on how to submit them.
Applications and supporting materials must be submitted or postmarked
by midnight on the deadline date (February 1 for fellowships; April 1 for the final deadline). We have a rolling admissions process and will offer early admission to a few outstanding students. We do not fill all
ten spots until mid-April.
If you wish to know the status of your application, it's fine to contact the program office.
The basics: GRE scores (General Test for everyone and the Subject Test for those without a PhD); three letters of recommendation (online only);
transcripts
from all colleges attended; UCSC Graduate Studies online
application; and the application fee ($60). The two required writing samples are included in the application as the
Statement
of Purpose and the Personal History. Be sure to list your research experience where indicated. Use the Additional Information section if you'd like to add more details, a longer list of publications, upload a cv, write special notes to the reviewers, or include anything that wouldn't fit in the body of the application. See the FAQs section or the application instructions of the graduation division site for information on reactivating your application from a previous year.
