Burney Le Boeuf is professor of biology at UC Santa Cruz and has been studying elephant seals for more than twenty-five years. In 1983, after the building of the first depth recorder that could be attached to the seals, he has been studying their diving habits.

Warren Zapol is head of anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and is on the faculty of Harvard medical school.

Peter Hochachka is in the zoology department at the University of British Columbia in Canada.

Sheila Thornton is conducting research towards a doctorate in the same department.
